US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1870 and opened a law practice in Red Oak, Iowa that same year. In 1872, he was State's attorney and served as attorney general of Iowa, 1881 to 1885. In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving until resigning in 1900, to accept the appointment of United States district judge, southern district Iowa. He remained in position as district judge until his death.
