An unincorporated area in Kern County, Claraville sits at an elevation of 6302 feet and was a thriving mining town in the 1860’s. Located in the Piute Mountains, there were many mining camps, but most were deserted by 1869. Some mines were revived in the 1930s with the resumption of operations during the depression. A post office operated at Claraville from 1940 to 1941 and from 1949 to 1957. The town buildings have long been removed and most of the area reverted to wilderness. Claraville’s private land now spans 2 square miles within the Sequoia National Forest. Weekend cabins frequent the private land.
