Army Sgt. Matthew Apuan, 27 of Las Cruces, NM. Apuan, was a 1998 graduate of Las Cruces' Mayfield High School. He studied hotel management at New Mexico State University for three years before joining the Army in March 2001 and was a tank gunner with the Fort Hood, Texas based 1st Cavalry Division. He hoped to return to college after his enlistment ended in 2008. He was finishing seven years of active duty. He had seven months left before his enlistment was up and he was going to go back to New Mexico State University and finish his degree. He was always interested in going into the military. His senior year at Mayfield he took the advanced placement test in history. His big interests were the military and history. As a freshman, Apuan was a member of the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Mayfield. As a senior, he was on the Trojans' track team. He also played soccer in the High Noon Soccer League. He was 27. Apuan is survived by his parents, Charles and Sandra Apuan, and his sister, Amiee Apuan, all of Las Cruces.

Matthew S. Apuan, 27, of Las Cruces, N.M.; sergeant, Army. Apuan was killed Feb. 18 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
