Melvin Carl Baker Sr., age 85, of Afton, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. He rejoins his wife of almost 62 years, Vera (LaPeer) Baker, his parents, Carlton and Violet (Acha) Baker, his siblings, Rosella, Corrine, Douglas, Willis, Gerald and Marilyn, his grandson, Christopher M. Boughner, and his great grandson, Trent E. Haynes.
Melvin was born February 12, 1932 in Cheboygan, the son of Carlton and Violet Baker. He served is country in the United State Army from July 15, 1950 to June 24, 1955 in Germany.
He married the love of his life, Vera Jean LaPeer on May 14, 1955 in Cheboygan. Together they raised their family in Pontiac where Melvin worked for General Motors, and moved back to the area upon his retirement in 1987.
Melvin is survived by his six children, Melvin (Ann) Baker of Afton, Leonard Baker of Waterford, Karry (Roger) Knaffle of Gaylord, Deborah (Michael) Boughner of Pontiac, Kevin Baker of Afton and Penny Ellis of Afton, 14 grandchildren and soon to be 20 great grandchildren and his brothers Bernard (Joyce) Baker of Cheboygan and Carlton (Debbie) Baker of Brighton.
Visitation will take place at the Lintz Funeral Home on Friday, June 2 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 3, at 11:00 Am, also at the funeral home with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Chaplain Dianne Myers will officiate and burial will take place at Walker Twp. Cemetery.
