He was the eldest son of Bert L. and Emily E. (Brain) Allen.

He started out as an auto mechanis in Marshall, IA.
His first wife's name was Ula/Eula Fern Birdsall, b. about 1897 in Iowa.
They had children:
1. Bert Edwin born 1918
2. Robert born 1920
3. Manning Fletcher, born March 23, 1923
Ula died that year, and little Manning died in 1924.

Edwin married Irene (Loomis) Brown and they had children:
4. Dorothy Beatrice, born March 16, 1926 in Coon Rapids
5. John Loomis, born March 17, 1927 in Ames
6. Phillip Manning, born April 19, 1931 in Tama

In the 1930 census his first two sons lived with their Allen grandparents in Ames. In Ames, Edwin was a garage manager in the 1930s and had a Chevy & Buick dealership in the 1940s.
J. H. Loomis, his widowed Father-in-law, 86yrs. old, a Michigan native, lived with them until his death.
