Captain John Reynold Palmer of the 12th Foot Regiment arrived in Victoria, Australia on the “Empress Eugene” in 1854. On arrival in Victoria, Captain Palmer and the 12th Foot Regiment were sent to Ballarat, along with the 40th Foot Regiment as military reinforcements, becoming involved in the Eureka Stockade battle. In 1856, he was sent out to the Swan River Colony, Western Australia with a detachment of the 12th Foot Regiment, taking over from the 99th Foot Regiment. He seems to have retired to Albany in 1860/61, only to die within months of arrival.
