Corporal James Dougherty served in Company B, 7th United States Cavalry during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was with the pack train and in the hilltop fight. He enlisted on 5 Dec 1872 and was discharged on 5 Dec 1877.

Dougherty also served as a Sergeant in Co. E, 17th US Infantry from 1877 to 1882. He died of tuberculosis.
