Henry Houston Lewis was born in eastern Tennessee on 29 April 1837. His mother had the surname "Scates". He also had a brother, James Wyatt Lewis. His parents were poor and he received only a partial elementary education but could read and write in a very nice hand.

When the Civil War broke out he enlisted with the Union forces and served the entire 4 years of war without receiving any injuries. He served in Co. H, 8th Missouri Cavalry. He was married to Sara Jane "Sally" Rippy before the war. He was married four times, outliving his first three wives, but all his children were by his first wife, Sara Jane "Sally" Rippy. He died in February 1922 at the home of his son, Eli Lewis. An eighth child, a girl, name unknown, was married to Farmer Sumner.
