Connie HERNANDEZ (1925 - 2017)

Obituary

West Sacramento, CA Connie Susana Hernandez, 91, passed away at her home surrounded by her family and friends, Saturday, April 8, 2017. Cared for at home by her husband and her daughter Sylvia, who was also her best friend. Connie was not afraid of death and smiled at everyone till the end of her well lived life. Connie was positive and strong, never once complaining of her illness in the months preceding her death. Left to honor Connie and remember her love are her husband of 70 years, Abel R. Hernandez; sons Richard Hernandez, David Hernandez, daughter Sylvia (David) Valverde; Grandchildren Erica, Mayan, Ruben and Michael; Great Grandchildren Anthony and Gabriel; Sisters Julia Paz, Josephine (John) Lotz; Godsons Carlos Vasquez and Gregory Guerrero, many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by her mother Matilde (Pedro) Melchor; father Dolores Hernandez, brothers Frank Mejia (Mary Jean), Peter Melchor (Alice); Uncle Jose Paz and daughter-in-law Nancy Vega-Hernandez (Richard). Connie was born in Sacramento on May 25, 1925. What shaped Connie's life and her beliefs were living through the Great Depression, she learned to live with very little and how to make something useful, beautiful or delicious out of nothing; the horror and sadness of seeing many of her neighbors and friends taken to the Japanese interment camps; the agony of waiting for her fiance to return home safely from World War II; her sons drafted to the Vietnam War. As a girl she went to The Lincoln School at 418 P Street, she was a member of the Lincoln School Alumni. Connie didn't complete her studies at Sacramento High School, she left to graduate from Moler Barber College and worked as a barber in her uncle's Barber Shop in what is now Old Sacramento. Connie was a lifelong learner. Once her children were older she went back to school to obtain her GED. She went on to graduate with her Associates of Arts degree from Sacramento City College. She took music classes and learned to read music and play the harpsichord. She continued her studies with a minor in English and a major in Spanish at Sacramento State University into her 80s. She supported community activism during the 1960s and 70s. She truly believed in social justice and her favorite saying was Si Se Puede. She cared for her grandchildren, and took them to preschool and was soon hired as their teacher at Merryhill Country School and the Department of Transportation (DOT TOT) daycare centers. Nothing gave her greater joy than her children and grands. She was very artistic and her talents included gardening, canning, baking, drawing, embroidering, crocheting, designing and making clothing and quilting. Her interests among many others were computers, sociology and psychology. She also enjoyed attending classes at the West Sacramento Senior Center. A nicheside service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 6509 Fruitridge Rd, Sacramento on April 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 p.m. at the VFW Hall, Post 8762, 905 Drever Street, West Sacramento, 95691. A special thank you to dear friends who helped care tenderly for Connie; Cristina Mora, Karen Govenor, Trudy Robles, neighbors Chrissy Scott and Kate Mathany, and Advanced Hospice staff, especially Danielle Roosevelt.
