Bette Jean Barrett was born in Shallow Water, Kansas to Elmer Harley Hawkins and Winona Hawkins (Williams). She was raised in the Lewellen area and then moved to North Platte as a teenager. On April 5, 1946, she married Warren Barrett at Oberlin, Kansas. Bette was an excellant seamstress and designed many western shirts for the Hadley Barrett Band. In 2006, Hadley Barrett was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame located in Colorado Springs, CO.
