Joseph Whitney was the son of Judah Barber and Palmer Whitney, born in Orange, Massachusetts in 1798. He was the oldest of eleven children. On Nov. 20, 1823 he married Sophronia Taylor in Gilsum, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Their first child, Joseph Palmer Whitney, was born May 20, 1824. Sometime between his birth and the birth of their first daughter, Nancy, Oct. 5, 1825, they moved to Java Village, Wyoming County, New York. Son Alonzo was born in 1827 followed by sons Edward G. "Edwin" in 1829 and Jasper in 1831. Their second daughter, Susannah Bliss, was born July 28, 1834 in New York and died Sep. 30, 1837, in Campton Twp., Kane County, Illinois, so the family obviously moved from New York to Illinois sometime during her short lifetime. Kane County is in the Chicago area. Daughter Elvira was born in 1839 and son Jasper in 1841. By 1850 the family had moved a short distance to Wayne, DuPage County, Illinois. Joseph, now 52, and 26-yr-old son Joseph were listed in the census as farmers and sons Alonzo (23), Edwin (21) and Jasper (18), as laborers. Sophronia was 45, Nancy, 24, Elvira, 11 and Luther was 8, all living under the same roof. The family's final move, by 1860, was to York Twp., Carroll Co., Illinois, near present-day Thomson, a move of about 115 miles East, close to the Mississippi River. Joseph died Nov. 24, 1872 and was buried in Lower York Cemetery.
