Meades Anderson Kirby was born into a Quaker family about 1800 in Halifax County, Virginia. He was a planter and, according to census records, was assisted in his work by slaves (even though that was not condoned by Quakers). He married Sarah C "Sallie" Word on December 22, 1823.

The couple had a large family. Their children, as named in the federal census records, were:
Jeremiah, born about 1824; Mary A, born about 1829; Sarah F, born about 1834; Nancy G, born about 1841 and Frances H "Fannie," born about 1843.

Sarah declared herself to be a widow in the 1850 census - Therefore, it appears that Meades expired sometime between 1842 and 1850. Sarah continued to plant with the help of slaves and her children. She died in 1874.
