Soon after the battle, he received a commission of Lieutenant in the US Army Cavalry. After the war, he took a tour of Europe and came back to Baltimore to be a merchant. He joined the citizen soldiery and was made Brigade Major. He soon earned his title as Colonel of Cavalry. He retired from this position and did not in the military until the mob of 1835 at which he was appointed commander to the City Horse Guards. He was late elected Colonel of the 53rd Regt Militia which he held til 1851. He was elected Mayor of Baltimore in 1846 and again in 1848 retiring in 1850.
