The obituary of Jenny Lee (Helton) Smith as published on the Tri City Funeral Home website:

Jenny Helton Smith
April 11, 1931 - January 11, 2022

Jenny Lee Helton Smith, 90 years of age, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, while at the Tri City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cumberland, KY. Jenny was born in Four Mile, Kentucky, on April 11, 1931, to Elisha and Willie Mae Farmer Helton. The oldest of four daughters, Jenny and her siblings grew up in difficult times. She attended Red Bird Missionary School in Clay County for a while, then returned to Lynch High School, where she was a cheerleader. Jenny was introduced to Bruce Smith by a mutual friend and that friendship blossomed into love. She graduated from Lynch High School and on June 16, 1951, Jenny married the love of her life, Bruce. She and Bruce would have four children and their love continued to grow each day until the day Bruce passed away, in January of 2005. Jenny graduated from the Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology and while she was a talented hair dresser, she used her gifts exclusively on family. Caring for her family and living out her faith were the most important things in her life.

Jenny was saved as a teenager and lived her life serving her Lord. She was a lifelong member of the Cumberland Church of the Nazarene, where she was the church secretary and treasurer for many years, until her health took a decline and prevented her from serving. It has been said that Jenny was the closest thing to a saint this side of heaven. She was loving, patient, giving, and independent, and although she was a petite 90 pounds, she could put away as much food as any man. Gifted in many areas, Jenny especially loved to quilt and cook, and she was a talented seamstress.

Jenny is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Bruce Smith; her parents, Elisha and Willie Mae Helton; a son, Gerald Smith, and a sister, Corrine Taylor.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Nancy Shepherd and husband, Lonnie, of Cumberland, KY, David Smith and wife, Robin, of Lawtey, FL, and Melissa Lowe and husband, Lonnie, of Harlan, KY; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and one on the way; daughter-in-law, Rita Smith of Whitesburg, KY; two sisters, Joann Livingston of Berea, KY, and Bobbie Sue Owens of Corbin, KY; her beloved sister-in-law and best friend, Mary Day, of Cumberland, KY; as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends.

Visitation for Jenny will be Saturday, January 15, 2022, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 P.M., at the Tri City Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 with the Reverend Dillard Stanley officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the Dixon Cemetery, Cumberland, KY. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Tri City Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith family.
