Mary Ann was the daughter of John Thomas and Barbary Grimes. Known siblings were Nancy, Lucinda, Elizabeth, James, Joseph, Henry and Martha.

She married James Love Fields Sr. on December 6, 1871 in Ray County, Missouri. They had one son, James Love Jr.

After the death of James Sr., she later married Samuel Finley Kennedy around 1878 in Ray County, Missouri. They also had one son, George Allen.

Maternal grandparents were George Grimes and Nancy Carlock.
