Ida Harmon 1908-1998

Ida Augusta Harmon, 90, of Bagley, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at the Greensview Health Care Center.
Ida was born January 16, 1908 on the family homestead near Shevlin, to Sigurd and Karen (Sorenson) Syverson, who had immigrated from Norway in the late 1800's. Ida was the 10th of 15 children.
As a young girl, Ida enjoyed learning and as a result completed eight years of schooling in just five years. She adored her father who died when she was just 12 years of age. She taught herself to play piano and organ, and throughout her life was musically inclined. As a young woman, she taught herself to crochet and knit, and was a gifted seamstress as well.
Ida married Bert Harmon on February 23, 1929. Together they moved to Algona, Iowa where the y spent the first year of their marriage. They returned to Minnesota and lived near Shevlin eventually moving to their farm south of Shevlin where they remained until the mid 1960's. To this union four children were born.
Following their move to Bagley, Ida worked in the laundry at the Clearwater Memorial Hospital until her retirement in the early 1970's. During the 1970's, she enjoyed traveling across the United States wit her youngest daughter Nancy and her husband Johnny Johnson.
She moved to Parkview Apartments in 1977 after Bert moved to Greensview Nursing Home. Bert died in 1980. In her later years, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking and visiting with her family and friends. She maintained a strong interest in current events.
Ida successfully battled breast cancer in 1983 and led a productive and full life. She was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1996. For the past two years, she resided at Greensview Care Center.
She will be remembered for the strength of her spirit and her strong convictions.
She is survived by four children, Alvin (Betty) of Bagley, Carol (Don) Olsen of Staples, Minnesota, David (Carrie) of Bagley; and Nancy (Johnny) Johnson of Kalispell, Montana; a sister Anna Harmon of Bagley; a brother Arthur of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband; brothers Syver, Karlot, John, Harold, Frithjof, Olaf, Joseph, Carl, Sigvart; sisters Petra Wells, Marie Semenko and Helen Strand; and one great grandson.
Her funeral was Monday, May 11, at 1 p.m. at Berean Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey Swanberg officiating. Interment was at the Bagley City Cemetery. Cease Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
