American Government Official, Author, and Political Scientist. His father was a Polish diplomat whose postings included Germany, the Soviet Union, and Canada. The Brzezińskis stayed in Canada after the start of World War II, and Zbigniew received bachelor's (1949) and master's (1950) degrees from McGill University. He then moved to the United States and attended Harvard University, from which he received his doctorate in 1953. He taught at Harvard (1953-1960), and Columbia University (1960-1989), and became a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and other organizations interested in US national security. He was an advisor to John Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign, and worked on the State Department's Policy Planning Council during the Johnson administration. After advising other Democrats in the 1960s and 70s, in 1976 he was an advisor for Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign. He subsequently served as National Security Advisor for Carter's entire presidency. His policy efforts included normalization of relations with China, the SALT II nuclear arms limitation treaty, and the Camp David Accords between Palestine and Israel. In 1981 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and he later taught at Johns Hopkins University. He was the author of 12 books on foreign policy.
