Norma Jean (Avana) Bernard, 76, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the 20th of November, 2016. She was born in Modesto and has been a resident for more than 50 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, John Bernard; her three children, Leann (Barry) Bernard-Miller, Lorna (Doug) Bernard-Updike, and Lisa (Mike) Bernard-Dust; sister, Vicki Evans of Modesto. She is also survived by grandchildren, Abby (Miller) Conger, Emily Miller, Nathan Davis, Jessica Davis, Kyle Dust, and Haley Dust. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vincent Philip Avana and Annalee Loretta (Avana) Duke; her siblings, Lee Avana, JoAnn Costley, and Vivian Norsworthy.


Norma graduated with the 1958 class of Modesto High School. She soon married her high school sweetheart, John, in 1958 as well. Besides being a loving and caring mother, she worked several different jobs which included baby-sitting, aide, certified nurse assistant, and many years as school cafeteria manager in Modesto. She followed her husband for twenty-five years while he was moving from city to city with his career. After retirement, Norma enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and also enjoyed supporting her grandkids in their activities.


She was active in her church, especially with anything to do with preparing and serving meals. A celebration of life is scheduled for Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the North Modesto Church of God, 1918 Sherwood Avenue, Modesto, Ca. The celebration begins at 11am. NORMA J.
