It is unknown when Daniel was born or who his parents were. It is known that he lived in Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont before entering service to his country.
On 01 July 1848 in Underhill, Vermont, he married this biographer's 2nd Great Grandaunt, Anna Pollard, who was the daughter of Thomas and Anna Pollard.
Daniel and Anna were the parents of Royce Daniel Burns, William H. and Burton Bailey Burns.
Daniel served in Company A 7th Vermont Infantry. He enrolled 07 December 1861 and was mustered into service as a private on 12 February 1862.
He was taken sick near Vicksburg with Black Jaundice and when fever set in was taken to Baton Rouge, at the time of the Battle there he was removed and died at Camp Williams near New Orleans of said disease contracted in the service in the line of duty.
He was originally buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery then reinterred in Chalmette.
