Jacqueline Marie "Jackie" Reed, 87, of 1745 Park Ave., Coal Township, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving husband and friends.
She was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late Atty. John L. and Marie (Dean) Pipa.
Jacqueline graduated from St. Edward's High School in 1947, and attended St. Joseph's College for women in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She was a graduate of the New York School of Social Research and of the Fashion Academy of New York.
Jacqueline performed on the Paul Whiteman Television Revue, worked as the assistant costume designer for both the Jackie Gleason Television show and the National Automotive Show at the New York Coliseum, New York City in 1956. She was employed as a merchandiser for the Friedberg Co., a children's clothing firm. In 1950, she was named Miss Census of New York City. Jackie was selected as a candidate for Miss Surfmaid on a Long Island Beach by Dennis James of CBS "Chance of a Lifetime" in 1955.
She was a committee person for the Coal Township Centennial Committee and served on the former Shamokin State General Hospital Board of Trustee's for 10 years.
Jacqueline traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe.
On June 15, 1963, Jackie married Melvin C. "Butch" Reed, who survives.
Prior to becoming a full time homemaker and mother, Jackie held offices as secretary and treasurer in the BKP Television Company, Sunbury, and the Municipal Television Systems, in Bloomsburg.
She was a member of the former St. Joseph's Church and always participated in various religious, social and educational activities throughout the area.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, Melvin C. "Butch" Reed, she is survived by a son, John L. Reed, Esq. and his wife, Anne, of Wilmington, Delaware; two grandchildren, John L. Reed, Jr. and Lauren Slater Reed; a sister, Patricia Mack Kelley, of Bear Creek; a niece, Dr. Heather Mack; and four nephews, Mark Mack, Esq. and Thomas Mack, Steve and Scott Sabol..
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were a son, Andrew M. "Andy" Reed, on June 27, 2012, and a brother, John L. Pipa III, who died in 1956.
REED — Jacqueline Marie "Jackie" Reed, 87, of 1745 Park Ave., Coal Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mother Cabrini Church, 214 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin. Interment will follow in St. Edward's Cemetery, Coal Township. A viewing will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the James Kelley Funeral Home, James F. Kelley director, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School, 2001 Clinton Ave., Coal Township 17866.
