The son of Reverend Donald Arthur Schultz and Mary Louise Stephan, Martin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was baptized on 25 Mar 1962 at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in St. Vital, Manitoba, Canada.

He married (Living) Gartman on 10 Jun 1983. They were the parents of 4 children.

Martin attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent his vicarage year at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska. He graduated from Concordia in May of 1988 and was ordained on 06 Jun 1988 in Red Bud, Randolph County, Illinois. He accepted a calling to become the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.

On 01 Dec 1991, he was installed as the pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wood River, Madison County, Illinois. Some of his additional ministerial work included membership on the district and circuit Boards of Synod, and serving as circuit visitor at Metro East Lutheran High School and as vacancy pastor at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills, Illinois.

Martin's wife was a third grade teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church School in Edwardsville, Illinois.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wood River was founded in September of 1916. He presided over the church's 100th anniversary celebration year in 2016, which coincided with his 25th anniversary as St. Paul's pastor in December of that year.

He was highly regarded by church members and was well-known for his warm personality, strong singing voice and gentle sense of humor.

On 24 May 2017, Martin was speaking to the congregation during Wednesday evening services at Concordia Lutheran Church when he collapsed suddenly. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. At the time of his death due to a massive heart attack, he was 55 years, 2 months and 15 days old.

He was survived by his wife of 33 years; 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law; 1 daughter; 5 grandchildren, with a 6th due in December of 2017; his mother of Illinois; 1 sister and brother-in-law; 3 brothers and 3 sisters-in-law; and many extended family members, including aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

By the time of his unexpected death, 2 of his sons had already followed the Schultz family tradition of becoming Lutheran ministers. 1 was serving as the associate pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Wisconsin and the other was the associate pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Schultzes' youngest son graduated from Concordia Seminary on 19 May 2017, and their only daughter was a sophomore at Concordia University in Chicago, studying to become a Lutheran school teacher.

Martin was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation was held from noon until 5 p.m. on 29 May 2017 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wood River and more than 1,000 people attended. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning, with the crowd filling the church and church lobby. Additional attendees were seated in the church basement, where they watched the proceedings on television. Marks Mortuary in Wood River was in charge of arrangements.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church.

Children: 3 sons, 1 daughter.
