His full name was Vincent Andrew Lawrence Rutledge.
He enlisted in 1942 from Philadelphia. He first served on the US Navy Sub Chaser SC -679 as Yeoman 1c, He then was Chief Yeoman on the heroic Destroyer Escort USS Conklin DE 439 in WWII in the Pacific. The ship sank 2 enemy submarines while in great danger herself. Later the ship was rolled on its side in a typhoon. The masts were in the water. Oil and seawater flooded the ship, all power and light was lost. Only superb seamanship saved the life of the crew.
His draft card says his full name was Vincent A. Lawrence Rutledge and that his mother's name was Mary E, Rutledge. At that time he was 21 years old and worked at the Standard Accident Insurance Company
