David J. Mercer, 80, of Lincoln, NE passed away on May 20, 2017.
David was a wonderful, caring father to his children. His family was very important to him.
He was an avid bowler (5 days a week) and was very much looking forward to golfing this summer.
He also loved family gatherings, being the first to arrive and the first to leave.

He LOVED his Lexus!
This was his pride and joy.
One of his favorite pastimes was to drive around the neighborhood watching the new buildings being built (including a Lexus dealership right by his house!)

He was a hardworking man who got to enjoy his retirement.
David was also proud of his service in the Air Force and the Air National Guard.

Survived by son, Doug Petersen, wife Janeen, and their daughter, Tara Petersen (Austin) and their children Ava, Olivia & Rowan.
Son, Steve Petersen, wife Bernice, and their children, Scott Petersen, his children, Emily, Logan, & Becky Erickson (Dustin).
Daughter, Jean Peters, husband Tim and their daughters, Kristy Schanbacher (Steve) and their daughters, Allison & Gabrielle; Angie Nykodym (Kevin) and their daughters, Taylor & Anna.
Son, Ted Petersen, wife Donette and their children, Amanda May, her children, Grayson & Sophia; John Peterson (Marcia) and their son, Reid.

Sgt Mercer was born in Tooele, Utah on 30 March 1937. He attended grammar school at Tooele Central Junior High and high school at Tooele High. Sgt Mercer left high school after his junior year to enlist im the US Army in the May 1954 for a 3 year term.

During military service Sgt Mercer attended basic and advanced infantry training at Fort Ord California, then went on to Fort Eustis VA. Where he attended an eight week course on Diesel Electric Locomotive Repair. Upon graduation, Sgt Mercer went to Korea for a 16 month tour. Where he was assigned to the 724th TBRO (Transportation Ballalion Railway Operating). While in Korea Sgt Mercer cross-trained into the administrative field working in orderly room with additional duty of postal clerk, sending, receiving, sorting and distributing all mail coming into or leaving the unit. Upon re-assignment to the Conus, Sgt Mercer was assigned to the Replacement Depot at Fort Lewis, WA. Sgt Mercer processed records and personnel through the depot for overseas assignment. Sgt Mercer was honorably discharged from the US Army in May 1957 and returned to his home in Utah. He went to work for the International Smelting & Refining Co. for 8 months Sgt Mercer re-enlisted in the USAF in Jan 1959 at Hill AFB Utah, assigned as admin clerk in N06AACS Weather SqDN. In April 1959 Sqt Mercer went overseas to Etain, France. Assigned to 36th Tac Righter Wing for a 36 month tour. Here, sgt Mercer got his GED for Hugh School completed and again cross-trained into AGE repair. After 18 months in France his unit was transferred to Bitburg, Germany where he completed his tour of duty. June 1962 Sgt Mercer was re-assigned to Lincoln AFB Ne, with the 307th SAC Bomb Wing in April 1965. Sgt Mercer was Transferred to Mather AFB California untl his ETS 6 jan 1966. Sgt Mercer returned to Lincoln, Ne. where he went to work for the Lincoln Elks Club as clubroom Mgr. Sgt Mercer enlisted in the NEANG during this period Sgt Mercer has deployed to Turkey twice, once to Alaska. Sgt Mercer left the elks & went to work for Schwieber Fine Foods in 1976 as a driver-salesman working his way to transportation Mgr.
