Captain John H. Pell served during the Civil War in Company I, 1st Minnesota Infantry. He was mustered in on 29 Apr 1861 and was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on 17 Sept 1862. He resigned his commission on 26 Mar 1863.

John H. Pell is buried in the Wessells family vault at Valleau Cemetery along with his wife Mary Bogert (Wessells) Pell and her parents Wessell Wessells and Catherine L. (Zabriskie) Wessells.
