Joyce Eleanor Hobbs, 77, died at the hospital on January 21, 2015, with her son John and daughter-in-law Norma by her side.

Joyce was born on March 20, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Thor and Erna Christie. Although she was born in the Midwest and spent time living in Mississippi, New Jersey, Louisiana and California, she eventually followed her son to Maine to help raise her granddaughters in her adopted state.

When Joyce was in her 50s, she decided it was time to go to college. She worked hard to earn her Associates Degree from the University of Maine Augusta and earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Maine Farmington.

Upon graduation, she worked for Motivational Services before retiring in 2003. Joyce was very involved in her community. When her granddaughter's 4-H leader passed away, Joyce and her neighbors, Trina and Nancy, started a new club for the town.

She loved teaching the kids and anyone else who wanted to learn how to cook and do crafts - two of her favorite past times. She dedicated her time to setting up the exhibits at the local fairs and always looked forward to traveling to the Big E every fall.

She was an animal lover who rarely was without a dog by her side. Her aunt Audrey instilled a love of travel in Joyce that became a passion of hers. Aunt Audrey was a travel agent and used to bring Joyce along on journeys to Europe in her younger years. This passion remained with her as she cruised the Caribbean sea, journeyed to Alaska for a dream trip with George, brought her granddaughters to Illinois and Florida, and traveled to Wisconsin as recently as last June to visit her dear friends, Dawn and Jim.

Everyone who met Joyce loved her, including her fellow parishioners at the First Congregational Church of Pittston and her Wired 4 Life Sisters. She was always baking someone a pie or a plate of cookies, crocheting an afghan for a charity fundraiser, or for a favorite waitresses' new baby.

Surviving are her son John (Norman) Strainer of Sidney; her girls Lisa Strainer of West Gardiner, Trisha (Andrew) Delaney of Providence, Rhode Island; and her former daughter-in-law Sherry Mather of Manchester.

She remained extremely close with her many nieces, great nieces/nephews, cousins and extended family who live far away but were always in her heart.

Joyce was preceded in death by her partner in crime and beloved life partner, George M. Hobbs; both her parents; two sisters; two nieces; and her dear friend Trina Gutfinski.

Celebration Life at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, and a gathering at the First Congregational Church in Pittston.

The family would like to thank the medical staff who cared for her in the emergency room during her last hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be sent to The First Congregational Church of Congregational Church in Pittston.
