SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Stephen Trent Billings, 48, of San Diego, Calif., passed away Dec. 3, 2016, due to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Trent was born in Aurora, Ill., on Dec. 7, 1967, the son of Robert Northrop Billings and Patricia Fryer Billings.
He attended schools in Fairfield, Connecticut; East Greenwich, Rhode Island; Marietta, Georgia; and Mountain Brook, Alabama. He later graduated from Minneapolis Community College with an associate degree in mathematics. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Trent later became a licensed plumber in California and owned Billings & Sons Plumbing of San Diego, Calif.
Trent is survived by his son, Spencer Billings, of Vista, Calif.; his mother, Patricia Fryer Billings, of Venice, Fla.; his father and stepmother, Robert and Ann Billings, along with their children Elliott and Sydney, of Yarmouth, Maine; his grandmother, Dorothy Fryer Marvick, of Live Oak, Fla.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Earl Manford Fryer, and Ernest and Mary Billings.
Trent will always be remembered as a precocious soul. Curious, intelligent and determined, he let nothing stand in his way to explore the things in which he had interest. During Trent's childhood, he spent many summers in Villisca, Iowa, with his grandparents Earl and Dorothy Fryer. While there, he attended church with them, went fishing with his grandfather, and frequented the local swimming pool. He was an individualist who did things his way. Yet, he was thoughtful and kind, especially to those much younger and those much older than himself. While owner of his plumbing business, he would often do work without charge when he thought the cost would be a burden on the client.
At 6'4", his big personality matched his stature. He literally filled any room where he was present. Trent loved the outdoors and was involved in scuba diving, surfing, snowboarding, and rappel-ling down tall city buildings. He would often skateboard from St. Paul through Minneapolis and into Minnetonka, Minn.
Clearly the love of his life is his son, Spencer Billings, of whom he was immensely proud.
The months following Trent's diagnosis were emotional and full of uncertainty. He faced death as he faced life; it was an unknown adventure, which he embraced bravely as he left this world to be with his Lord and Savior.
We offer a very special and heartfelt thanks to Gary Gerberich, who spent countless hours at Trent's bedside and was with him upon his passing. Gary brought comfort and care to Trent and to those who were unable to be with him.
Arrangements are being made by Walker-Merrick, Wolfe Funeral Homes. Interment will take place at Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, Iowa, on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 11:30 a.m.
