Trudy E. Mitchell, of Evansville, IN, died peacefully at her residence, Wednesday evening, May 17, 2017. She was preceded in death by William H. Mitchell, her beloved husband and best friend. Bill died August 28, 2010. Trudy and Bill were longtime residents of Albion, IL prior to moving to Evansville in 2008. In Albion, the Mitchells owned M & M Oil.
Trudy was born in Werdau, Germany (near Leipzig, in what was formerly East Germany) to the late Paula (Wolff) and Heinrich Fritzche. Trudy received a Baccalaureate Degree from City College of Werdau. After being smuggled out of an East German work camp under the seat of a military jeep, Trudy met Bill the day she arrived in Nuremberg. Bill who was serving as a Military Police officer with the US Army, was assigned as head jailer for the Nuremberg War Trials. After a three year courtship they were married January 18, 1948. American law at the time required them to leave Germany within thirty days of the wedding. They returned to Illinois and began their life together.
Numerous individuals and organizations in Illinois and Evansville will long remember the support and generosity of the Mitchells. A few of the many things Bill and Trudy sponsored and supported include a ballpark, community flag poles, an annual get acquainted dinner for German students at the University of Southern Indiana, twice bringing the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra to Albion for concerts, organizing a holiday care package campaign for the troops in Iraq, and helping countless individuals in need.
In Evansville, the Mitchell's support included, but not limited to, Mesker Park Zoo, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Evansville Museum, Deaconess Hospital and the University of Southern Indiana. At Deaconess, the Mitchell Pavilion in the Health Sciences Building is named for them. They were responsible for the purchase of the first CT scanner at Deaconess in 1978, and provided ongoing support for cancer care at Deaconess up to the present day. Even after Mr. Mitchell's death, Trudy never missed a Deaconess Foundation Party of the Year. The relationship between Bill and Trudy and the University of Southern Indiana goes back to 1969, when the permanent campus was established. Their interest included scholarships for nursing students, support for USI's the Christmas Dinner-musical The Madrigal Feaste, the German Language program, Historic New Harmony, New Harmony Theatre, the Golden Key International Honor Society and-the Mitchell Endowed Presidential Scholarship. The Mitchell Auditorium is named in their honor and in 1985, both Trudy and Bill received honorary doctoral degrees, the University's highest recognition.
In 1995, the mayor presented Bill and Trudy with the Key to the City of Evansville. Trudy was a member of the Evansville Kennel Club. She was a Director Emerita of the Deaconess Hospital Foundation Board, and the University of Southern Indiana Foundation. At USI Trudy was a member of the President's Associates, the President's Circle, and the Reflections Society. She was a recipient of the Nicholson Leadership Award, and served as a member of the campaign cabinet for the USI Foundation's first-ever capital campaign which concluded in 1998.
The Sunday, May 21, 1995 edition of the Evansville Courier published an interview with the Mitchells. Perhaps this quote from Trudy herself, describes best a life well lived with an attitude of giving and caring. When asked why they gave so much to so many Trudy replied: "We decided when we were first married, we would share our blessings. We will always do that." Needless to say they did.
Visitation for Mrs. Mitchell will be Wednesday, May 24, 2017, from 3pm to 7pm at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave, Evansville. Services will be held at 10 am Thursday May 25, 2017 at the funeral home. Father Stephen P. Lintzenich and The Honorable Lloyd W. Winnecke, Mayor of Evansville, officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Land Cemetery, Albion, IL.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Deaconess Hospital Oncology Fund at 600 Mary Street Evansville, Indiana, 47747, and the University of Southern Indiana nursing scholarship fund at 8600 University Boulevard, Evansville, Indiana, 47712.
