Bill E. Mitchell, 83, died Thursday, April 27th at his winter home in Naples, Florida.
He leaves his wife, Judy Mitchell; brother, Gary (Sherry) Mitchell; brother, John (Ruth) Mitchell; sons, Bill Mitchell Jr, Mark (Wendy) Mitchell; daughter, Debra Mitchell Johnson; step-daughter, Kim (Dana) Brooks; step-son, Tim (Laura) Cope. Bill also leaves ten grandchildren, one step-great grandchild, and many close friends.
Bill Mitchell, or “Mitch” as most of his friends called him was born and raised in Newark, the son of Earl and Oleta Mitchell. He was a lifelong resident of Newark, Ohio.
Bill was passionate about his community, business, friends, and more importantly, family. He believed everything was earned through hard work, life experiences, and honesty. Bill was an innovator and developer that led to the creation of the “Mushroom” apartment. This unique concept allowed him to build a very successful company with the founding of A1 Developers and, later, Mitchell Systems. Bill left his “mushroom” footprint throughout the city of Newark, and surrounding communities. He was always thinking and looking for the next idea, project, and challenge. Newark was his hometown, and the relentless pursuit to make his hometown better was always a priority. Bill was a philanthropist, and involved with many local charities and organizations. He donated time and money to many projects throughout Newark, including Newark Rotary Pavilion, Newark Rotary Auction, Newark Rotary Accessible Playground, Bill E. Mitchell Retirement Center, Call to College Project, Licking Memorial Hospital, Saint John Lutheran Church, Licking County 4-H Band, Newark Fraternal Order of Police, Newark Fraternal of Elks, Loyal Order of Moose, Saint Vincent Haven and many others. He also sponsored the Salvation Army with his annual Guest Bartender Night Fundraiser for the past 27 years. He matched all cash contributions each year, and became one of the largest single donors to the local Salvation Army. Bill and his wife Judy recently started “Benches Across Newark” a beautification project, that will install benches throughout the downtown area in Newark. Bill has never been one for recognition, but has been recognized many times for his contributions and involvement in the Newark Community. He recently was awarded the 2016 Newark Rotary Bravo Award. As we get older, priorities change and Bill’s main priority became his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He would do anything for his family, and support them through all of life’s challenges, even though it would jeopardize his own lifestyle. He enjoyed spending holidays, and watching Ohio State football games, with family members. He especially enjoyed the 4th of July celebration with a full house of family. He enjoyed talking with his grandchildren, attending their special events and occasionally distributing “two dollar bills” to them. Bill had many friends, and those of you that were close to him know how important each of you were. There was not a restaurant, parade or event, that he wouldn’t recognize someone he knew. Bill had time for everyone, and enjoyed sharing stories to anyone who would listen. He was generous, and would always help someone in need. Bill enjoyed the golf matches, card games, cigars and, more importantly, the conversations. He respected and valued all his friendships.
Visitation will be on May 24th from 2:00 to 5:00pm, followed by a Memorial Service and an Elks Service at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home located on N. 21st Street. “Celebration of Life” reception will follow the Memorial Service at the Elks Lodge AT 6:30pm located on N. 3rd Street.
