Lyle C. Abbott, 92, of Columbia passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Lenoir Woods Retirement Community in Columbia, where he had lived for the past 15 years.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Epple Chapel of the Lenoir Woods Retirement Community. A private burial service will take place later at Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton, Iowa.

Lyle was born Dec. 14, 1917, on a farm southeast of Afton, Iowa, the son of Charles Merrill Abbott and Ethel Euella (Orwan) Abbott. He married Margaret Schwanz on Aug. 29, 1942, in Luther, Iowa.

In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Forces and served as a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot in Italy with the 346th Fighter Squadron of the 350th Fighter Group, 12th Air Force. Following the war, he received a degree in technical journalism from Iowa State College (now University) and worked for Iowa State University Extension briefly before buying into the bi-weekly Osceola, Iowa, Tribune and Sentinel. He worked there as editor until 1952, when he moved to Milwaukee, Wis., to join Klau Van Peterson & Dunlap Advertising. In 1959, he moved to St. Louis and joined Gardner Advertising Agency, where he supervised accounts for John Deere, Ralston Purina and Northrup King Seed. He retired in 1978.

Survivors include his wife Margaret and three children, Linda Allen (James) of Churchville, N.Y., Eric Abbott (Tatyana) of Ames, Iowa, and David Abbott (Elizabeth) of Boulder, Colo.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Viola Abbott, and Ruth Shelley (Howard) of Pontiac, Mich.
