Virginia Allen Almon Magee age 95, passed away May 13, 2017. Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, May 18 2017 in the chapel at Lloyd James Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.
For Taul and Blanche Allen, Virginia was their seventh child born June 12, 1921 in Henderson County. She graduated from Tyler High School and Tyler Community College. After having worked as a secretary to Jake Wolf of Mayer-Schmidt for 3 years, she married Samuel Allen Almon. He was her first love and proved to be a loving husband and father. They lived in several Texas cities as a result of Allen's career. In 1970 after Allen's death she returned to Tyler and lived there until 2010.
A talented seamstress, a proficient homemaker, and a good bridge player, Virginia's delight was always in the antics, the happenings, the goings on of her family. She delighted in her daughter, Judy, always being her best cheerleader. In 1973 Virginia married John Douglas Magee, and she lovingly embraced his sons John Douglas, Jr. and Donald Edward. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren always felt Gran's love and generosity abundantly. Virginia will be remembered as a devoted friend. Thank you, Dorothy Mackey and Linda Lindsey for your constant friendship throughout her life. She never met a stranger, and she kept her audiences entertained with storytelling and laughter; she truly embodied "the gift of gab." Virginia's clever and witty personality, combined with her optimistic love of life and trust in God, made her a joy to be around.
The second half of her life was spent with John Douglas Magee. This wonderful southern gentleman stripped away all her insecurities and fears and caused her to bloom and grow. She laughed harder and tried things she had been too timid or fearful to try before. She flourished in their relationship of 37 years.
Virginia is survived by her daughter Judith Almon DuPuy and her husband Bob of The Woodlands; her stepson Donald Edward Magee and his wife Susan of Douglas, and Bette Magee of Houston, the wife of now deceased stepson John Douglas, Jr.; nieces Elizabeth Allen, Valerie Thayer, Sarah and Nancy Grace; nephew Richard Allen; grandchildren Miles Freeman and his wife Jennifer, Claire Modjeski and her husband Michael, Mark Magee, David Magee, Matthew Magee, Jeremy Magee; and ten great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Samuel Allen Almon and John Douglas Magee; her stepson John Douglas Jr.; and six brothers and sisters Attis May Adams, Hoyt Allen, Lloyd Allen, Olna Allen, Ima Irene Allen, and Trueman Allen.
Marvin United Methodist Church, Tyler became Virginia's and Doug's church home. She served with United Methodist Women and on several church committees. She and Doug participated in the Friendly Class and enjoyed traveling with Bill Byerly and the "Grown-Ups." Many of their combined activities revolved around friends at the church, mission projects, and trips to various performances and destinations. Picture memories of these friends' trips and events remained topics of great joy for Virginia and Doug in their later years.
