First Earl of Wavell. General who served initially in the Boer War in South Africa. During the first world war he was blinded in one eye while serving on the Western front. As Commander-in-Chief of the allied forces in the Middle East in the second world war he defeated Italian troops in North Africa. He became Viceroy of India and held the post until 1947. A writer of history, biography and poetry, he published many books.
