Painter. He was a prolific Hungarian artist, who largely worked in the Impressionist tradition, and depicted landscape scenes of nature, the weather, and poor people such as peasants and workmen. Born Ladislaus Josephus Balthasar Eustachius Mednyánszky into a noble family with a castle, he attended a grammar school in Késmárk, near his home, then attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Munich, Germany from 1872 until 1873. He became dissatisfied in Munich and moved to Paris, France to attend the École des Beaux-Arts. After the death of his professor, Isidore Pils, in 1875, he left the École and began practicing independently from Montmartre. He traveled throughout Europe but spent the years 1889 through 1892 mostly in Paris. In 1888 he received the Prize of the Society of Fine Arts in Budapest. Mednyánszky held his only solo exhibition at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1897. From 1905 until 1911, he lived in Budapest, then later moved to Vienna. When World War I broke out in 1914, he was in Budapest, working as an art war correspondent on the Austro-Hungarian frontlines in Galicia, Serbia, and the southern Tirol. His realistic war paintings documented the carnage of the battlefield. In early 1918, he returned to Nagyőr to recover from war wounds. Many of his paintings were destroyed during World War II. He died in chronic poor health, at the age of 66. Among his notable works include "Old Tramp" in 1880, "Landscape in Autumn" in 1890, "Angling Boy" in 1890, "Hillside in Springtime" in 1903 to 1904 and of his father, "Old Man's Death" and "Dead Nephew" both in 1890. Besides his oil-on-canvas, he drew with charcoal and pencils. His works can easily be found in auction houses. In 2023, his paintings "Moonlight Scenery" and "Moonlight Lake" sold at auction at a price between $30,000 to $50,000 each. In 1999, his highest auction bid was $84,638 for "Blooming Trees".
