He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Castalia, Iowa, to Frank and Marie (Allen) Cannon. Leslie was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from May 7, 1946, until April 2, 1947. While rollerskating years ago, he fell and was helped up by Audrey Nielsen and it was love at first sight. On April 12, 1948, they were married in Preston, Minn., and they recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Leslie always liked to tell that story, saying that he "fell for her." Together, they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. Leslie was a lifetime member of VFW Howard County Post 4561 of Cresco, Iowa, and Cresco American Legion Post 135.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey; six children, Patti (Bernie) Puffer of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Victor Cannon of Buffalo, Mo., Ruby (Larry) Lightfoot of Seattle, Marian (Ron) Bodin and Jeanie (Kent) Bender, both of Blaine, Minn., and Nancy Steele (Tub Stoltz) of Caledonia; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mila Damon of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Richard Leslie "Ricky" Barnes; two brothers, Dean and Lynn (June) Cannon; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Damon.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia. The Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. A graveside service and burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Kendallville Eddy Cemetery in Kendallville, Iowa, with military honors by the VFW and American Legion, both of Cresco. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from noon until time of services.
