MIDWAY - Mr. Johnny Lyde Griggs Jr., 58, of 9689 Old Highway 52, Midway Community died Friday, June 23, 2000, at 11:36 p.m. at Forsyth Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Midway United Methodist Church, where the body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Harry Sellers Jr. and the Rev. John Wheeles will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Griggs was born Jan. 11, 1942, in Winston-Salem to Johnnie Lyde Griggs Sr. and Florence Miller Griggs. He was a graduate of North Davidson Sr. High School, class of 1960, and he attended Western Carolina University. He was employed with Owens-Brockway and was formerly a farmer in the Midway Community. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, the Davidson County Horsemens Association and he was a lifetime member of the NC Cattlemens Association. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Methodist Men. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Jo Harrell Griggs of the home; two sons, John L. Griggs III and wife Misty of Midway and Donnie Ray Batten and wife Katherine of Thomasville; two daughters, Sherry L. Griggs and husband Craig Reddick of Welcome and Janice D. Batten of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Zachary, Chris and Haley; and brothers, Lynn Griggs and wife Janet, Glenn Griggs and wife Loretta and Dale Griggs and wife Dana, all of Midway. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel and at other times at the residence on Old Hwy. 52 North. Memorials may be directed to the Midway United Methodist Church Building Fund, 9795 Old Highway 52 North, Lexington, NC 27295.
