Helen M. Rodgers, age 94, of Centennial, Colorado, died Wednesday August 31, 2016 at Highline Place in Littleton, Colorado after an extended illness. She was born January 29, 1922 in Troy, New York. She received her diploma in nursing from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam, New York in 1943.

Upon graduating from nursing school and in the midst of World War II, Helen joined the Army and was assigned as a Nurse Corps officer to Fort Kearney in Nebraska. It was there that she met her husband, Lieutenant Robert E. Rodgers. They married on July 27, 1944, before he deployed to England as an Army Air Corp navigator. At the end of the war, she was honorably discharged.

Bob and Helen eventually moved to Randolph, Nebraska where they raised their family. Helen was employed as a nurse in the local physician’s office and Bob built and maintained a large animal veterinary practice. They lived in Randolph for about 20 years and strengthened connections to Bob’s extended family in northeast Nebraska. During that time they developed a close circle of long-term friends.

In 1974, Bob’s work took Helen and him to Lincoln, Nebraska where he took a position as a veterinarian with the State Department of Agriculture and Helen continued her career, first, at a rehabilitation hospital and later, at Lancaster Manor. After Bob’s death in 1997, Helen moved to Tennessee to be close to her daughter, Christine and family. In 2015, she moved to Colorado, near her daughter, Karen and family.

Helen is remembered lovingly by her 3 children, son Robert Rodgers and wife, Joan, of San Diego, California, and daughters Karen Jenkins and husband, Lynn, of Centennial, Colorado, and Christine Dennis and husband, Brent, of Clarksville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Robert Glover and wife, Marina, of Troy, Michigan, Andrea (Dennis) Duncan and husband, Doug, of Nashville, Tennessee, Denise (Glover) Montoya and husband, Anthony, of Pocassett, Massachusetts, Eric Dennis of Clarksville, Tennessee, and James Jenkins of Centennial, Colorado; and 5 great grandchildren; Rionna and Miles Glover, Ryan and Levi Duncan, and Gannon Montoya, as well as a few siblings-in-law and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to Robert her husband of 53 years, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Frank P. and Filomena Marano, her brothers Joseph, George, and Frank Marano, and her sisters Sally Consula, Mary Carpenter and Betty Hill.

Helen’s family extends sincere thanks to the amazing and caring staff of Fieldstone Place of Clarksville, Tennessee, Highline Place of Littleton, Colorado, Dr Robert McClay, and Suncrest Hospice of Denver, Colorado. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).

Services will be performed at a later date. Helen will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetary in Denver, Colorado. Arrangements are entrusted to the All Veterans Funeral Home in Denver.
