William was ordained to preach on March 28, 1915. He spent his early days near the soil and among the cattle of Texas. He knew the life of the cowboy and loved the plains. He was a man of 31 years of age with a family when he answered the "call" to preach. In 1915 he sold his stock, farm and moved his family to Brownwood to attend Howard Payne College. In the fall of 1919 he entered the South Western Seminary in Ft. Worth. He spent several years pasturing at churches in Central Texas. He became interested in Associational work and helped the late G.S. Hopkins promote the first Sunday School Enlargement Campaign in Dallas County. He ministered to rural churches. He wrote a tract on the subject of "Financing the Country Church, or The Budget that Budge." This was a method of financing part time churches grown out of practical experiences of his. The plan of financing part time churches has been widely publicized and used in many rural areas to develop the Stewardship of the churches and strengthen the ministry among these churches. He was married over 50 years to Laura Frances Sellars. To this union four children were born. William Carroll, Virgil Harold, Fred C, and Laura Francis. After the death of his first wife in 1960 he married Clara Ethel Carman on September 6, 1961.
