Vera Maddox Hicks, 89, a long-time Florida resident, died Friday May 12th at Treasure Coast Hospice House in Fort Pierce.
Born in 1928 in Gastonia, NC, Vera was a retired Registered Nurse, faithful Christian, Mother, Wife, Sister, Grandmother, Aunt, and friend. She worked in multiple hospitals in Charlotte, NC and Fort Pierce, FL in surgical and orthopedic specialties, and split time over the last 40 years between Fort Pierce and Clermont, FL. Throughout her life, Vera loved and cared for animals, and her last companion, Cookie, was laid to rest just a few short weeks before her passing. She enjoyed being outside throughout her life whether traveling, fishing, gardening, or golfing, and also loved to read, work puzzles, shop, and do whatever she could to help other people. She was an active member of the Clerbrook Golf Community in Clermont until 2014, FL as well as the Brookdale Assisted Living Community in Port St. Lucie, FL until earlier this year.
She is predeceased by her husband Virgil L. Hicks, daughter Pamela L. Luke, sister Hilda Smith and parents Felix L. Maddox and Rosa Payseur.
She is survived by her sister Wanda Abercrombie of Charlotte, NC; son Robert Conrad, of Ozark, AL; daughter Rhonda C. Henson of Mountain City, GA; Grandchildren Rebecca Shortridge, Jamie Duplantis, Jason Martin, Joshua Martin, Jennifer Harris, Shawn Conrad, Shannon Conrad, Timothy Conrad, Christa Grant, Kathlyn Conrad, Karyn Conrad, Michelle Conrad, Bethany Conrad; 14 Great Grandchildren, 7 Great-great Grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
