Dr. Gwendolyn M. Boyd, passed away at home in Kinston, N.C. on August 29. Born in Reidsville, N.C. on July 5, 1948, she was the daughter of James H. and Olive Boyd, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one brother ...and others. Gwen graduated in 1970 from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a B.S. in Physical Education. In 1977, she graduated from medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill, and later completed her residency in OB-GYN at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. In 1981, she entered the U.S. Air Force, serving as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at KI Sawyer Air Force Base, in Gwinn, Mich. Following her military service, in 1984 she joined the teaching faculty at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she practiced for 10 years. In 1994, she became the Director of Gynecology at Cornell University's Gannett Health Center in Ithaca, N.Y., a position she held until 1999. Gwen returned to her native North Carolina continuing the work about which she was most passionate – teaching. While serving as Anatomy and Physiology instructor at Lenoir Community College in Kinston and Beaufort Community College in Washington she was awarded Honored Faculty recognition on two occasions and the Teaching Adjunct Faculty Award in 2005. As a teacher, doctor, or an associate, Gwen's career was marked by her professional knowledge and eagerness to mentor others. She will always be remembered for her caring, her generosity and her unique gift for touching the lives of students, co-workers, patients, friends and family.
