Agnes Ryan was an editor, writer, feminist, suffragist, vegetarian, pacifist, and a WILPF speaker who proposed a school of nonviolence. In the early 1900s, she was the managing editor of the "Woman's Journal", a weekly publication of the American Woman Suffrage Association in Boston devoted to "the interests of woman, to her educational, industrial, legal and political equality, and especially to her right of suffrage." (Her husband, Henry Bailey Stevens, was the assistant editor.) When she and Henry married in 1915, she had to go to court in order to keep her maiden name. In later years, Ryan organized the New Hampshire Peace Union, wrote poetry, and was active in the MacDowell Colony of Peterborough, N.H., the nation's leading artist residency program. She and her husband adopted two children, Peter and Patricia. Ryan Way in Durham, N.H., is named after her.
