Mrs. Georgia Garner James, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She left her earthly shackles of sickness and pain behind as she went to join her Savior and her family in Heaven on this beautiful morning. She was born in Davidson County to Conrad and Mary Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, one sister and her husband Richard (Dick) James.

She is survived by her two children, Don James and Kathy J. Hensley, both of Winston-Salem.

Georgia began her working life in her early teens at Broadway Sandwich Shop. There she learned the skill of making delicious sandwich spreads. She enjoyed this as a “hobby” also, sharing generously her homemade treats with family and friends. She also enjoyed playing the piano, with beautiful songs and her beloved hymns often filling her home. When her children were born, she left public work and assumed the full time job of mother and homemaker, for which her children love her dearly. After her children left school, she returned to work for two decades at Reid’s Toys and Hobbycrafts at Parkway Plaza, where many more people came to know her and love her as well. Retiring in 1995, she cared for her widowed mother, who lived to the age of 102. Following the death of her mother, the dark storm cloud of Alzheimer’s disease began to cast it’s shadow across Georgia’s life.

Her children resolved to care for their mother at home, and many people helped and supported them along the way. Among a list too long to name, her children would especially like to thank the family of Eddie and Shirley Robbins and son Michael, Rev. Jack and Vera Nance, W.D. Taylor and family, Donna Pope, Sherri Smith, Janet and Tommy Throckmorton, Joyce Watts and Buddy Leonard. We would also like to especially thank the men and women of the Forsyth County EMS who came to help us many times during the years of mom’s illness. We are deeply grateful for their kindness and professionalism. We also acknowledge with sincere thanks the good people of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, and the kind staff of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jack Nance officiating.
