Grattan Henry Wheeler (1783-1852) - Find a Grave Memorial

US Congressman. The son of Silas Wheeler, a Revolutionary War veteran who took part in the burning of the ship Gaspee, Grattan Wheeler moved to New York with his parents in 1800, where they settled in Steuben County and founded the town that bears their name. He was a farmer and lumberman, becoming one of the first western New York farmers to grow grapes for producing wine. Wheeler also served in the New York Militia's Ninety- Sixth Infantry Regiment, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was Wheeler's Town Supervisor from 1823 to 1824, served in the New York Assembly in 1822, 1824, and 1826, and in the New York Senate from 1826 to 1830. In 1830 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Anti-Mason, serving one term, 1831 to 1833. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1832, and returned to his farming and lumbering enterprises. Wheeler became a Whig when that party was formed, and was a Presidential Elector for the Harrison-Tyler ticket in 1840.
