On Sunday, May 7, 2017, the world lost a truly great man.
Pete was born October 16, 1936 in Levidi, Greece, the last of five children born to John Mantas and Ioanna Karelas Mantas. He immigrated to America in 1947 and attended South High School, graduating in 1953.
Pete joined the United States Army on June 20, 1954 and served until June 24, 1957. Just before Pete completed his service in the Army, he took a short leave of absence and went to Greece, where he married the love of his life, Katerina Rogaris, on April 23, 1957 and they later reunited in Utah. Together, they had three sons, of whom he was immensely proud. Dad and Mom worked hard, raised their boys, and built a home of faith and love, where they maintained their Greek culture and Orthodox faith.
Pete was a true entrepreneur. He was incredibly hard working having started several successful businesses, including TearApart Auto Recycling, All Truck & Car, and S3 Software Solutions. He was very proud that his work and businesses would help provide the livelihood for literally dozens of families, yet Pete was anything but prideful.
Quiet strength. Integrity. Humble. Selfless. Honorable. Dignified. Honest. Caring. Faithful. Loyal. Generous. Beloved. Dad. Pappou (Grandfather). Brother. Theo (Uncle), Nouno (Godfather). Friend. He was these things and more. He was a Giant.
To have known Pete was a true joy. He always had a kind word, a boyish smile and a disarming sense of humor. A man of incredible inner strength guided by his faith, love of family, and his culture. When Pete lost Katerina to cancer in 1982, it was devastating to him and his three sons, but Pete carried on with dignity and resolve. In subsequent years, Pete had to also bury two sons; first John and later William. We wondered how he could ever shoulder the burden and pain, and yet he did so with a quiet strength beyond anyone's comprehension. He never complained, but rather continued to thank the good Lord for all his blessings.
Pete knew what was important; his life was simple but his riches were incalculable. He lived a beautiful and full life, not of material goods, but of family and friends. One of Pete's greatest joys in life was his grandchildren. He frequently took pleasure in telling them stories of his childhood. "Let me tell you something, son." He cherished each and every moment he spent with them. He imparted many priceless life lessons and words of wisdom to his grandchildren and to all who knew him. We were all truly blessed to have him while we could.
Pete is survived by his son, Chris (Emily) Mantas; daughters-in-law, Noula Mantas-Lowe and Joleen Mantas; grandchildren, Peter John Mantas, Katerina Vasiliki Mantas, Nektarios Panayioti Mantas, Katerina Eleni Mantas, Stavro John Sargetakis, Kaliope Maria Sargetakis, Katerina Maria Mantas, and Ana Maria Mantas; sisters, Thalia Matragos and Mary (George) Vosnos; numerous nieces and nephews; and many members of his extended family near and far. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, John Mantas and Ioanna Karelas Mantas; wife, Katerina Rogaris Mantas; father-in-law, John Rogaris; mother-in-law, Vasiliki Rogaris; sons, John Pete Mantas, M.D. and William Pete Mantas; brothers, Harry John Mantas (Aphrodite) and Tony John Mantas; and brother-in law, Demetreos Panagiotis Efstathiou.
Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 279 South 300 West. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
