Mrs. Mildred C. Payne was born November 5, 1926 in Whiteville, North Carolina, one of fifteen children, to Neil Graham Callahan and Mattie Powers Callahan.
Mildred Payne and her husband, Harold T. Payne, of 56 years, were long- time residents of Hampton initially settling at Langley Air Force Base. Mrs. Payne's life was not only about love of family but service to the military. While living in Hampton, many happy hours were spent as a volunteer at the Langley Thrift Store to support widows of retired military. She was also a hospital aid volunteer at Langley Hospital into her eighties. Everyone seemed to love and know "Millie". Mildred was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church since 1981.
She is survived by her grandson, Bryan Thomas Payne and his wife, Asia; great grandchildren, Cooper and Reilly; daughter-in-law, Anna Payne; brother, Sonny (Thurston) Callahan and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mildred's life will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the gravesite at Parklawn Memorial Park.
