Martha Esther Fowler Dorrity was born on May 11, 1928 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, and died on June 7, 2016. She grew up the youngest of 6 children; daughter to a self-employed cabinet maker and a homemaker.

Martha graduated from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in Jonesboro, Louisiana and attended Louisiana Tech.

In her earlier years she was a stenographer until her marriage to Charles Leonard Dorrity in Shreveport, Louisiana on July 8, 1951. They later opened Dorrity's Shoe Store in Tyler Texas. Martha and Len moved back to Shreveport where they started their family, as well as a new church, John Calvin Presbyterian. She was active in her church and the Shreveport Choral Ensemble. She and Len enjoyed sailing, shooting sports, music and their friends.

The family moved to San Angelo in the winter of 1961, where Martha lived until her death. She was a Christian woman who taught her children the importance of integrity, a good appearance, good manners and discipline. She loved Diet Pepsi, cornbread and milk, strawberries, lemon pie, "As the World Turns", a good bingo game and her home state of Louisiana where the family would spend holidays and summers.

Martha led a modest, unpretentious life, but made sure that her children had the things important to them, such as music lessons and tennis lessons. She led a very private life, and the few close friends she chose would be lifelong.

Martha was an excellent seamstress. She taught us how to cook a good pot roast and how to harmonize. By her own admission, her procrastination was a lovable trait of hers. She thought (and we often heard) that "haste makes waste" and "silence is golden".

In her later years, Martha loved an occasional trek to Shreveport, Elko and Laughlin with her friends Betty and Julia. Her special joys, however, were family gatherings with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The graduation of her grandson, Clayton, was an occasion she had jubilantly celebrated with her entire family two weeks prior to her death. What a great gift to her.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband; parents, William and Martina Fowler; five siblings; a grandson, David Blake Money; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Claire Dorrity; and a very special friend, Betty Smotherman.

Survivors are her children, Rosemary Calvert of San Angelo and Charles Dorrity of Lubbock; granddaughter, Katherine Christy (JR Christy) of Lubbock; their children Camille, Julia, and a September baby girl Christy; grandson Clayton Dorrity (Danielle Bourcier) of Lubbock; grandson Jacob Dorrity (Lindsey Nepomnick) of Lubbock and their children, Reagan and Kinley; special niece and caregiver, Diane Junginger; and special friend and caregiver, Julia Rogge.

A private family service was held in Turkey, Texas.

Special thanks to Dr. Ty Hughston, Rio Concho Terrace, and Hospice of San Angelo. Memorials may be made to Meals for the Elderly.
