Bobby John Gates, 83, of Girard, died at 11:35 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017 at his residence.

He was born January 17, 1934 in Labette County, Kansas, a son of John and Arabelle (Weakley) Gates. Bobby moved with his family to Radley, Kansas in 1939, attending grade school and graduating from Girard High School in 1951.

He served in the US Army as a civil engineer from 1951 until 1957.

Bobby married Carol Ann Saia on May 23, 1974 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Bobby was a lifelong farmer at rural Girard before moving to Wichita in 1989 and working for Beechcraft Aviation, retiring in 1999.

Bobby enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, antiques, flea markets, and traveling the area with Carol.

While in high school, Bobby was a member of the Future Farmers of America and he currently holds the track record of 22 seconds in 220 yard dash.

He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Carol, of the home are a daughter, Phyllis Ann Bia of Lawrence, Kansas; his sons, Sheldon Gates, and his wife, Jamie, of Erie, Kansas and Louis Bia, and his wife, Debra, of Lawrence; his sister, Linda Romanzie of Pittsburg; his brothers, Bill Gates of Frontenac, Kansas and Tom Gates of Beulah, Kansas.

Bobby was preceded in death by a son, Gary Bia, in 1990; his grandsons, Noah and Gabriel Gates, Spencer Bia; and a sister, Maxine Hardy.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Wednesday.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Wounded Warriors Project or the First Christian Church Building Fund and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
