Harold Lester Helms, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Moses Cone Hospital.

A service honoring Harold’s life will be held at 3 pm Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Lawndale Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Giaritelli and Rev. Marion Boling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Harold was born in Albemarle, NC and son to the late Lester Harmon Helms and Mary Elizabeth Helms. He was a US Army veteran serving in World War II with the occupational forces stationed in Germany. Harold retired as Senior Vice President from Gate City Federal Savings & Loan, now BB & T, in 1988 following 31 years of service. He graduated from Albemarle High School and the Savings & Loan Institute through Indiana University. He is a past member of the Greensboro Exchange Club.

Harold’s life was dedicated to his family and to his church where he was an active member since 1958. He was a faithful member of the Bridgers Sunday School Class at Lawndale and served for many years with the SOS group, Serving Our Seniors. Harold had many friends through church, his past professional life, and his community at Friends Homes West.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Betty Beam Helms, of the home; daughter, Dianne Hobbs and husband, Jack of Asheville; Grandson Adam Hobbs and wife, Katie of San Francisco; Claire Barnes and husband, Nathan of Saratoga, Wyoming; Great Granddaughter, Nora Claire Hobbs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Helms Efird

The family would like to especially thank the following for all of the support and care that Harold received during the last 3 years of his life: Serving our Seniors group at Lawndale Baptist, Friends Homes West staff, and the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care Northwest Greensboro.
