Maurice Penn “M.P.” Long, age 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the late afternoon hours of Monday, February 1, 2016 at Mission Manor Nursing Home in Mount Vernon, surrounded by his loving family.
  Maurice was born on July 16, 1922 in Franklin County to the late Daniel Bryan and Ora Mae King Long.  Following high school, MP attended John Tarleton College and served in the United States Army Air Corps where he saw action during World War II in the India-China-Burma Theatre as a radio operator in the Air Transport Command.  His 1800 flying hours include 600 in combat.  M.P. attained the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Air Metal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medal.
  M.P. married Allie Noline Rutledge on December 24, 1941 in Mount Pleasant.  After 74 years of raising his beloved family and living a lifetime of memories, she survives.
M.P. lived his life by example.  He worked his life as a civil servant as the Fire Chief for Franklin County and as the Post Master for Mount Vernon, among several other jobs to support his family.  Through a life of service and dedication to his community, he earned numerous honors, including: multiple Fireman of the Year Awards, Man of the Year in 1966, and a Paul Harris Fellow recipient in 1988.  He served as a Deacon for First Baptist Church, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, the Hospital Board, the Child Welfare Board for six years, and the Mount Vernon School Board for 14 years.   
  Those who knew M.P. will remember the love he had for his family.  He was never shy in declaring that he had the greatest family.  M.P. was proud to declare his first love was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He led his family with great faith and taught them by his example.  M.P. truly enjoyed cattle ranching, quail hunting, and fishing.  He was also a proud Mason for over 67 years and a longtime member of the Jack Henry Class at First Baptist Church.
  M.P. is survived by his beloved wife, Noline; one son, Kevin Long, and wife Rita; two daughters, Linda Robinson, and husband Wayne, and Marilyn L. Elbert, and husband Bobby, all of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Tammie Dickson, and husband Mike, of Mount Vernon, Tracy Lane, and husband Lonny, of Longview, Richard Elbert, and Amy, of Gladewater, Shelee Duke, and husband Mark, of Allen, Brandi Chadwick, and husband Cliff, of Powderly, Kasey Long of Mount Vernon, and Denise Smith, and husband Waylon, of Longview; great-grandchildren, Dustin, and wife Hayley, Jayson, and wife Michelle, Colby, and wife Whitney, Logan, and wife Brittney, Brooklyn, Brady, Robert, Jordan, Maggie, Brycen, Kaden, Ryland, Lane, Laikyn, and Kellen; great-great-grandchildren, Matthew, Carter Penn, Luke, Corah, and one baby girl to be; caregivers, Sandra Burns and Sharon Martin; special friends, Tom Shiels and Darlene Shiels; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and very special friends. M.P. was also preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Park Long and Billy Glenn Long.
  Funeral services for Maurice Penn “M.P.” Long will be held at 10 A.M., Thursday, February 4, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon with Pastor Pepper Puryear and Dr. Pete Freeman officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Vernon City Cemetery with his beloved grandchildren serving as pallbearers.  Billy Jordan, Tommy Phillips, Butch Raley, Edson Reynolds, David Whitfield, and the men of the Jack Henry Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M., Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
