Rensselaer Evening Republican - Tuesday, 31 October 1922: OLD SOLDIER PASSES TO REWARD. John Cavinder, a well known pioneer of Walker Township, passed away at his home there Monday morning at eleven o'clock, at the age of ninety-one years. He had been a resident of Walker Township for the past forty years and was well and favorably known to a large circle of Jasper county citizens. Mr. Cavinder enlisted in Jasper County and was with Sherman's march to the sea. The Republican was unable to learn the time and place of the funeral but it is understood burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery.
John is buried in the Dunkard Cemetery in Barkley Twp. He served in Co. A, 9th Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War.
