HICKEY, RICHARD S., 90, died at home in Miami, surrounded by his family, on February 2, 2012. He was born in 1921 in Schenectady, New York and moved to Miami the same year, with his parents, Leo and Flora. Dick attended Gesu schools through high school. After high school he attended and graduated from the University of Miami. In 1943, Dick joined the Navy and served in the Second World War, in both the European and Pacific fronts, attaining the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade). Upon returning from the war, he enrolled in the University of Miami School of Law, and in 1946, married Marjorie Kozak, the mother of their eight children: Colleen, Patricia, Margaret, Jeanne, Ellen, Theresa, Richard and Joseph. Dick graduated from law school in 1948 and, over the next two decades, practiced general law in a small, prestigious firm. In 1968, he was appointed to serve as a City of Miami Municipal Court Judge and, in 1971, became a Dade County Judge. In 1978, he was appointed by Governor Reubin Askew to the Circuit Court, where he presided for the next decade. Marge passed away in 1982 and, in 1988, Dick retired from the bench and moved to Georgia, with his second wife, Gladys Coley. For several years, the entire Hickey family enjoyed Thanksgiving celebrations in Georgia. Dick returned to Miami after Gladys passed away and, four years later, Dick fell in love with MaryLu Desmond, whom he married in 2000. Dick is survived by his wife, MaryLu; his eight children; nine step-children; thirty-three grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren and his brother, Jack. His brother, Bob, predeceased him. Visitation will be from 6-8:30 PM Monday, February 6 with Wake Service at 7:30 PM at Stanfill F.H. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 7 at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7270 SW 120 St., Pinecrest, FL, after which there will be a private burial. The family will continue the celebration of Dick's life at the home of his daughter, Jeanne Rothman, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society .
