Herbert R. “Herky” Brooks, 81, of 265 Big Tree Road, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017, at UPMC Chautauqua WCA.

He was the husband of Susan Robertson Brooks, whom he married in 1985.

Born May 7, 1936, in Franklin, Pa., he was one of nine children of the late Herbert and Eva Galbreath Brooks.

Herky had owned and operated Town & Country Food Center in Sugar Grove, Pa., for almost 40 years. He also loved his 70 acre farm, complete with pigeons, chickens and horses.

Always liking the outdoors, Herky enjoyed camping, hiking and especially travel. Most precious to him though, were his many Sugar Grove friends.

In addition to his wife, Susan, surviving are eight children: Pamela Andrews, Patricia Phillips, Jill Lecherdone, Barbara Nygren, Herbert Brooks III, Jessica Bryant, Casey Kenny and Danielle Brooks; as well as 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Nancy Johnson, Sandy Haines and Susan Snyder; and a brother, David Brooks.

He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Brooks; three brothers: Tom, Gibby and Donny Brooks; and a sister, Annie West.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 18, in the Busti Cemetery. All are welcome.

A celebration of Herky’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall.

Memorials may be made to the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 5 Wilson St., Sugar Grove, PA 16350; or the Busti Fire Department, 886 Mill Road Jamestown, NY 14701.
